This is simply a gorgeous anime. From start to finish the attention to detail is simply phenomenal! The colors burst out, the vibrancy in the usage of theses colors is at times overwhelming and while the character renditions are nowhere near as strong as the environments they are still absolutely top notch. this is to say the least simply a beautiful land to observe and a wonderful visual feast. Overall while certainly not the most realistic of anime it is, in it's fantastical style, one of the best. Awesome feast from start to finish!
-Sound- 8.5/10
I have no complaints with the soundtrack. I also have no high praise. Having said that I am forced to say it is adequate, and unfortunately this often is perceived as a fault, and in this case it is certainly not. the soundtrack fits the story wonderfully, it doesn't necessarily shine but on the other hand it certainly does not detract either, and that in itself i not necessarily a bad thing. A solid job.
-Characters- 9.5/10
There has always been an argument in Anthropology as to whether personality determines culture or culture determines personality, personally I always felt culture influenced our personality which in turn influences our culture, after all, little in life is static. This movie does a great job of representing this. The characters certainly are creatures of their environment and yet a few, basically the main ones, certainly realize that the world they believed to be the world represents a rather small portrayal of the larger and greater picture. The boundaries between good and evil are dictated in the beginning by their cultures but as time passes they realize perhaps this line is a tad blurred. And while there may certainly be a right way and wrong way often the path to distinguishing the best way is determined by growth and trial and error. This is what this story does so well, the characters grow and to a certain extent evolve as they learn from their mistakes and from what is happening around them. You may not fall in love with them but you will care about their world and their concerns.
-Story- 9.0/10
One Thousand years have passed since most of the planet has been destroyed. Life, has, as it will, survived but the majority of the planet is covered by a jungle which is full of both giant insects and poisonous plants. People have survived and are thriving yet again. This story is the struggle of the rise of civilization and the fight nature pursues against the encroachment of technology. It is simply an enthralling story to say the least and the characters tell it so well you will become emotionally involved.
-Overall- 9.0/10
This movie was not only a visual feast but it was an immense joy. I loved my time visiting this land and my only complaint was it ended too soon. A seriously great and emotional romp into a wonderfully exotic place with simple, yet vastly interesting inhabitants.
