-Visuals- 9.8/10
The graphics are stunning to say the least. Everything from Kratos expressions to the rendering of the various enemies to the backgrounds themselves everything is remarkable looking. I still remember the first time I played it and I couldn't believe my eyes then, and I still can't. It simply doesn't get any better than this on a PS2. As in FFX it makes me wonder why all games aren't this good.
-Sound- 9.5/10
Dos this game have sounds? You mean to tell me those are sound effects and not actual sounds? Seriously, the sound effects may be the best in any PS2 game on the market. Not only do they fit pretty much exactly with what is going on but they mirror and match exactly what is going on. All the other developers should take notice. A sound track should match the feel and ambiance yes, but it should also match what is happening on the screen at any given time.
-Gameplay- 9/10
Gameplay is divided into two separate aspects. On the one hand you are in a non-stop action game fighting numerous enemies which appear to want nothing more than to destroy you (although the boss battles are very few and far between, which to be honest, while I wouldn't want every game to be like this I did somewhat enjoy not having a 20 minute battle every other hour). the other aspect of the gameplay is why I scored it only a 9 (because the battles and system deserved higher). Seemingly out of the blue the battles will cease and you will be confronted with a "puzzle". You will notice I put quotes around the word puzzle, I did this because to be honest only one of these "puzzles" was at all challenging. They almost seem to be an after thought, and while they don't really take away from the game they do tend to obstruct the ebb and flow a tad. Still, over all I did have fun slashing and stabbing my way to glory!
-Story- 9.5/10
Let's go back to Greek mythology. Ares, the God of War has went mad, but Zeus forbids the other Olympians to destroy him. So Athena persuades/recruits/convinces/etc Kratos (a former Spartan general who sold his soul to Ares for power to defeat his enemies) that Ares has tricked him and is only using him as a pawn. What follows is sheer bedlam as Kratos is now determined to let nothing and no one stop him from destroying Ares and becoming the new God of War.
-Overall- 9.6/10
One of the great games for the PS2, The only thing stopping it from being probably the greatest are the slight gameplay issues and the fact that at it's very core it is a relatively simple slash'em up game, not a whole lot of strategy is involved, mostly good timing and good hand/eye coordination. I thought in the beginning it was the best PS2 title I'd ever played... by the end I thought it was great, but certainly in my opinion not the greatest, but still head and shoulders above the vast majority of PS2 titles.
