Number 5
"What is the difference between a man and a parasite? A man builds. A parasite asks 'Where is my share?' A man creates. A parasite says, 'What will the neighbors think?' A man invents. A parasite says, 'Watch out, or you might tread on the toes of God... '"
-Andrew Ryan (Bioshock)
I love a good political/philosophical study in video games, and this quote by the creator of the great underwater city of Rapture shows exactly how he feels about society, as well what kind of man he is. Turns out he's a very fascinating man.
Number 4
"People die, and Yuna dances. When will she stop dancing? When will it stop? Yuna won't stop dancing, not until Sin is gone."
-Tidus (Final Fantasy X)
Final Fantasy X is an incredible game to play, and it was the first game that really made me tear up. Regardless of how you felt about Tidus (or his diamond pants) he was an extremely real feeling teenager. He would chose to ignore things he did not like and tried to act tough and selfish other times. Then he proved how much he cares for others and how he wants to help people, not just himself when he makes this observation on the dance Yuna has to do to allow the dead to rest in peace. He knows that he must eliminate Sin, a giant monster that tries to destroy Spira.
Number 3
The moment man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate... Entrusting his future to the cards, man clings to a dim hope.
Yet arcana is the means by which all is revealed. Beyond the beaten Path lies the absolute end.
It matters not who you are, Death awaits you.
-Nyx Avatar (Persona 3)
Nyx Avatar spouts off a ton of hard hitting quotes, but none ring more true than the 13th quote signifying that you are in for a heck of a battle. This quote embodies everything that you are fighting against, and that is just giving up on life and accepting that there is no point. Despite all the good in life, death will end it all. Persona 3 tries to tell us, the gamer, to live life and create bonds as they make life worth living (or at least I felt like thats what the point was).
Number 2
"F**king blocks... I'm gonna climb the sh*t outta you!"
-Vincent Brooks (Catherine)
Catherine was a weird, but fun game. Our protagonist is thrown into a dream world where he must climb towers of blocks to stay alive. While the story deals with infidelity and relationships, the gameplay dealt with climbing blocks. This quote is all you need to know about the gameplay
Number 1
"Such beauty they hold, these tears of sorrow. But are you worthy to shed such tears? The act of mourning the dead belongs to the realm of humans. The human race, fearful in its weakness, built this world in a futile attempt to elude the abyss they call mortality. Culture…civilization…all delusions created by a powerless race, and of little use, like a barren woman. But amidst all this, you continue to exist as an unfettered soul, free from the shackles of flesh and blood… A completely pure consciousness… An eternal spiral, undefiled by impurities… a fusion of fire, breath, and spirit… What can we call you…but angels? New, unadulterated psyches… But what you lack is reality. And that is what I shall provide you with!"
-Albedo (Xenosaga Episode I)
This entire scene is part of my favorite scenes in all of gaming. Albedo shows himself to be a deranged psycho by ripping off his own arm, followed by his own head, just to scare a little girl. Both grow back as he isn't exactly human to begin with. Nonetheless, he has a very low view on humanity and it's so called accomplishments. This line of his sums up how he views humanity, and the joy he takes in showing these failings to others. In short, this line makes Albedo my favorite villain in gaming.
