God of War II was released by SCE Studios Santa Monica for the PlayStation 2 on March 13, 2007 in North America, on April 27, 2007 in Europe and on May 3, 2007 in Australia. The game was directed by Cory Barlog and David Jaffe while Cory Barlog was the lead designer and Tim Moss was the lead programmer. The story was written by David Jaffe and Cory Barlog while James Balrog and Marianne Krawczyk contributing to the writing. Music was composed by Gerard Marino, Mike Reagan, Cris Velasco and Ron Fish. The game was heralded upon release as not only a worthy successor to the first release but many thought it was actually a better game garnering many game of the year awards and landing on pretty much every list of top PS2 games ever,
The story once again focuses on Kratos who is now enthroned as the new God of War, even though he is basically an outcast as far as the other gods of Olympus are concerned, He is eventually tricked by the other gods and stripped of his godhood being cast into Hades. The game focuses on his struggle, with the help of the Titans to exact revenge upon Olympus.
Game play is virtually identical to the first release although the game is bigger in every way, more puzzles, more boss battles and more carnage. Weapons are a tad different as well but are used in pretty much the same way as before as is upgrades, health and the occasional mini-game. The battles are fought almost identically with buttons and combinations of buttons used to accomplish attacks both in real time and in slow motion for the larger "killing moves".
The game continued the juggernaut that the first installment began selling millions and millions of copies and spawning interests in movies, comics and of course further sequels and spin-offs. The game continued to show the popularity of kratos and has shown little signs of sliding, still selling well and still ranked as one of the best PS2 releases ever.
