The story centers around Kratos, a mortal captain in the army of Sparta. On the verge of defeat by a barbarian horde Kratos pledged his soul and service to Are, god of war, if Ares would deliver him from defeat. Ares provides Kratos with unmatched power which allows him to ravage all of Greece. In an effort to further subjugate as well as empower Ares tricks Kratos into accidentally killing his wife and child. Instead of furthering Kratos alliance it caused Kratos to declare war on Ares and seek revenge.
The game is at heart an Action-Adventure game which at times utilizing both puzzle solving, exploring and hack and slash battles. Typical to the genre the game is third person and RPG elements than a straight up Action game. Attacks are relatively simple using a system any game player would have little trouble mastering while not being as complex as more advanced Fighting games. Upgrades and healing are found in chests throughout the various areas not due simply to experience or found in shops like many games. The game is known for it's "killing moves", once an enemy is weakened to a certain point a series of directions will be issued on the screen. In order to accomplish the attack buttons must be pushed in order of appearance and in a timely manner.. This aspect is vital in the majority of boss battles, which are also typically epic in stature as well.
The game spawned several direct sequels as well as spin-offs and each has sold exceptionally well as well as garnered excellent reviews. The games are known not only for their graphics, but for the excellent story telling and Kratos himself has become the ultimate anti-hero.
