-Visuals- 8/10
Typical Shin Megami rendering. As with all SMT games more consideration is put into the feel of the game as opposed to creating truly graphical masterpieces. Having said that I personally found the backgrounds to be very nice indeed. It gave a unique look to re-creating 1920's Japan. The backgrounds are pretty much pre-rendered and will become quickly familiar as you travel through the different areas. The people as well will typically consistently be in the same places pretty much all the time although what they "say" will change.
-Sound- 7/10
Sound is OK at best and everything is written, no voice overs really
-Gameplay- 8.4/10
I'm going to give this a slightly higher score than I might because of the originality in one aspect of the game. The game is basically a RPG which when in battle becomes a real time action game. What makes it different is that if you are strong enough not only can you capture the demons you are fighting but you can use them in and out of battle. This to me makes it unique, many games let you utilize captured enemies in battle but few will let you also utilize their special talents and powers outside of battle, I found this to be extremely original and enjoyable. And like all SMT games the demons themselves are wonderfully varied in looks, powers, weaknesses and strengths.
-Story- 8/10
Basically you are Raidou, a detective who takes on a rather simple sounding case of rescuing a missing girl, like all SMT games it quickly escalates into you battling various demons who have been unleashed in an attempt to take over the world. The story unfolds in a nice timely manner and the action will keep you interested throughout.
-Overall- 8.7/10
Let me start by saying I love SMT games. I think they are some of the best and well made games out for the PS2, and when I started this one I was unsure, it's similar to the rest in some aspects but totally different in others. By the end of the game I loved it, thus admitted it's not a great game but it certainly is a very, very enjoyable game with what I think are really good graphics, a good story and an over all feel which is truly wonderful
