-Visuals- 9.5/10
I almost wish I could give the game two different scores. On the one hand the frame rate is a tad choppy at times and like many PS2 (read most) games when you are up close the textures are obviously pixelated. Now, on the other hand, the art and backgrounds are truly stunning, especially considering you are for the most part in a very barren and forsaken looking landscape. The visuals in this aspect are stunning, even though it's mostly tones of gray it evokes the emotions the game wishes to in a truly spectacular fashion. For this reason I gave it a higher score than some might think it deserves. To me game doesn't have to a technological feast as long as it does what it does and does it well, in a sense this game is artwork with some moving characters.
-Sound- 9.5/10
Once again we faced here with a slight dilemma. the sound track is very soft for the most part and unobtrusive while the effects mirror what is going on with out making you believe you are in an action movie. For this reason I give it a pretty high score, not only does the sound compliment the game but it actually adds to the over all ambiance.
-Gameplay- 8/10
Now, for me here is where the love fest stops. The game is unreal original in idea, breadth and scope, however, some of those same things which make it original make it a tad repetitive to me. Every battle is here for all intensive purposes a boss battle. pretty much every battle requires puzzle solving, strategic planning and really good timing/coordination. And although the monsters are awesome in scope after a while I simply got a bit tired of doing something, while not the same, at least to me something very similar. Having said that, I can't think of many games period in which the monsters are so awesome, colossus indeed!
-Story- 8/10
You are in essence trying to revive someone very dear to you...you take her to an altar which is located in a cursed land inhabited by sixteen colossi whom you must defeat in order for your loved one to be (possibly) revived. Nothing really great or bad about the story, to be honest I felt it simply set up the boss battles, otherwise this would have been a simple fighting game.
-Overall- 8/10
One persons rose is another garbage etc. I guess maybe I simply didn't "get" it, most people I know who have played this game believe it to be one of the best, I simply found it to be somewhat repetitive (especially once I got tired of looking around at the scenery). A really good game (maybe for the wrong reasons though, while great art work is great it can't by itself carry a game) but in my opinion not a great one
