As I am so fond of saying a true case of the haves and have nots. The various backgrounds, especially the stylized post apocalyptic villages are all very nicely done. The various ships which traverse the deserts are also well designed and the world has a look and feel to it which certainly represents the destroyed earth in a great way. Unfortunately the characters actually seem to (almost) look like 2d cutouts in a 3d world. having said that I wouldn't call them terrible as it's pretty obvious they look as intended but in a bleak world full of destruction they seem a bit too colorful and cheerful looking to be honest. One noticeable exception is the Bishops of Rodo, they look creepy and awesome! So, overall a solid looking anime but somehow the pieces don't seem to all fit.
-Sound- 7.0/10
Voice acting for the most part seemed a tad flat to me. I won't go so far as to say emotionless but somewhat robotic and it appears, although thus admitted I didn't check, that some actors did more than one voice, which happens often but at least normally it's better disguised.
-Characters- 8.5/10
Ran is a great character with depth, feeling and drive. It's simple to see his motivations and spirit, especially since you get his back story through flashbacks, and he carries the story wonderfully. Ira is a joy as well. Coming across as strong and confidant you get to see her soft side and slowly, and I do mean slowly, see the enigma of her past (and future) unfold. The supporting cast is solid as well, although they are not fleshed out to the extent of the main two characters they each still have solid stories and fit withing the main story wonderfully.
-Story- 8.5/10
An interesting story. It on the service appears to be a DUNE re-telling but while it does have similarities I found it to only have those and not to be a copy. In the future civilization has polluted the Earth almost into unlivable conditions. Suddenly from space large objects appear which then systematically absorb almost all living organisms. They leave the planet a barren desert with only small enclaves of fertile land and water left. I'm not going to go into to much more detail as it would certainly give away the story but suffice it to say I found the story to be a nice little slice of sci-fi, it's not DUNE epic but it is enjoyable.
-Overall- 8.5/10
I enjoyed this a lot. It won't blow your mind but it also won't, I hope, put you to sleep. The ending is a little contrived and to be honest certainly unbelievable from a true scientific aspect but if you can suspend disbelief, after all it is sci-fi, then I imagine, like me, you will enjoy this nice little romp and consider it time well spent.
