-Visuals- 9/10
A great looking game. Overall, everything is rendered nicely. Facial animation is a bit choppy, but most PS3 games that I have played seem to suffer from this problem. The frame rate stays at a solid rate for the most part. I did, however, have the game freeze on me once and the game would hang up at times when loading. The load issue happened after a checkpoints in massive battles (which you get plenty of in this game). After the load, the game reverted back to it's normal frame rate. Cut scenes use the same graphics engine as game play. Killzone 2 features some incredible game play graphics. Dust flies up as bullets are shot into the ground, debris that you can use for cover disintegrates as it is shot, and sprinting causes a blur in your peripherals. All of the environments look great. Only the load hang ups, which are annoying but don't take away from the game, hurt the visuals score.
-Sound- 9.5/10
No major complaints for sound. Weapons sound nice, music is well done, and voice acting is average. The screams of soldiers, both ISA and Helghast, sound great and perfectly match the war torn feel of the game.
-Gameplay- 8/10
No major complaints for the game play either. Killzone 2 is a first person shooter which means two things; you are essentially a one man army, and the enemy has a seemingly infinite number of troops to throw at you. A major difference, though, is that enemy troops are actually intelligent. They won't make themselves easy targets and they actually run away from grenades. Enemy troops hide, try to ambush and outflank you and your squad. You often have a couple of men joining you on your missions. They, however, are not smart. Your allies will stand out in the open and get shot to pieces. That aside, the only other issue in the game play is the slightly repetitive nature. Luckily, the game throws in just enough variation to keep it somewhat fresh. Using massive turrets, operating a waling tank, or planting explosives, help to keep the game varied.
-Multiplayer- ?/10
Hopefully someone can write a multiplayer review as I was terrible when I tried it out.
-Story- 7.5/10
Killzone 2 is the direct sequel to Killzone and Killzone: Liberation. In it, you play as Sev, a solider in the ISA. You are part of an invasion fleet to the planet Helghast. Everyone believes that the invasion will be over quickly with a decisive victory. Predictably, things begin to go wrong. Much of the story takes place during game play meaning that you can easily miss parts of the story because, well, you're being shot at and grenades are blowing up everywhere, making any speech hard to hear. To sum up the story, it's an Us vs. Them game with not much more to it.
-Overall- 8/10
A fun game with a liberal check point system. It's a good game to pick up and play when you are bored. Don't play Killzone 2 if you want a deep, complex story line; but if you want a game to just kill an endless amount of enemies, pick this game up. Multiplayer was well received in other reviews, and hopefully I can get a review up for the multiplayer before too long.
